Astromancer

Astromancers develop the most detailed understanding of the magical interpretation of information from the past, present, and future and from across the planes of existence, while delving into the arcane secrets of the mind.

Students studying to become an Astromancer learn to locate, interpret, protect, and convey information through magical means. Astromancy has been around for millennia and is one of the oldest and most diverse fields of magic. Students studying Astromancy learn a variety of techniques to divine information and truth from the world around them, including working with crystals, elements, metals, numeric divination through geomancy and arithmancy, reading natural signs such as the stars or planets, and channeling and receiving messages from other planes of existence. Some learn to be experts in matters of the mind: placing and removing memories, mind-reading and disturbance, and similar techniques, while others are consulted before important decisions or to interpret dreams and chains of events.

Astromancers may work in altering states of consciousness, summoning spirits, and moving between planes of existence. Graduates with a specialization in Astromancy may go on to work in the legal system dealing with matters of prophecies, or use their powers to assist in matchmaking, counseling, or consulting for a wide variety of interpretations and divinations.  Modern Astromancers gifted in numerology also play an important role as magical economists, assisting Magisters and Justices with divining trends that affect future Magimundi policy.

TYPES: Court Mindreader, Numerologist, Magical Economist, Dowser, Prophet, Mindbreaker.

Cursebreaker

Cursebreakers develop the most detailed understanding of the way all spells, but particularly curses, function.

Students following the Cursebreaker Major are dealing with magic itself more than any other path, both in theory and practice. They were originally founded to contend with the complicated and deadly ancient magical curses in tombs and historical sites, and their major’s name reflects this. In the modern era though, a Cursebreaker is the most knowledgeable Wizard to precisely determine by magical residual effects the details of a cast spell, making them invaluable detectives.

Cursebreakers often specialize in runic translations, ancient languages, codes and cryptics of all sorts, and setting wards and protections (or disabling them). Cursebreakers often then create curses (or break them!) to protect property from those who would unlawfully take it from its owners. Finally, Cursebreakers are most qualified to create brand new spells and reverse engineer existing spells to improve their effects or make casting less inefficient or strenuous.

TYPES: Detective, Spellcrafter, Purifier, Cursebreaker Breaker, Tomb Raider, Magical Security Expert

Healer

Healers develop the most detailed understanding of how magic interacts with the human body.

Contrary to what one might expect, not all healer students feel a vocational duty to alleviate suffering. Learning the healing arts requires students to study all the interactions between the human body and the magical world, not merely magical poisons, diseases, and curses, but also the effects of potions and spells to enhance and augment the body, sometimes in controversial ways. Healing may involve a complex administration of potions, naturopathy, ritual, and use of other spells, depending on the magical malady encountered.

Healer students, perhaps more than any other major, also study mundane medicine seeing it as a valuable body of knowledge to draw from in order to enhance magical healing techniques. It’s a common trend for healer students, what with their interest in the body, to also take an interest in sometimes physically demanding sport and exercise, which is considered to be a bit “unwizardly” in the Magimundi.

TYPES: Caregiver, Med Entrepreneur, Ripper, Transfigurist, Surgeon, Potion Vendor

Artificier

Artificiers develop the most detailed understanding of how magic affects the physical world.

The path of the Artificier is complicated by an internal conflict, the pragmatism of building (ArtificER, the fabricator’s term) juxtaposed by the aesthetics of design (ArtificIER, the artisan’s term). If it’s a magical object or artifact, the artificier student must know how it was made, how to destroy it, how to replicate more of it, and how to make it better. This type of magical creation is not nearly as forgiving as spell casting or potion brewing, requiring a detailed exactness in order to make functioning objects that also last.

More than any other path, there’s significant amount of Leeuwendaalders waiting to be invested in Artificiers who might create the next life-changing device in the Magimundi. The most significant interest is in artifacts and devices that can function in concert with mundane technology, or at least duplicate mundane technology’s functionality. These items and designs are at the very cutting edge, with students creating innovations that even their professors have never seen before or imagined.

TYPES: Power Stockpiler, Fabricator, Artisan, Weaponizer, Break Stuff, Merch Maker, Technophile

Cryptozoologist

Cryptozoologists develop the most detailed understanding of how magic interacts with the living world.

Students majoring in Cryptozoology are invested in the Magimundi’s magical creatures, but how they view that investment is a subject of intense debate, not only at the school but across the Magimundi. The discovery, study, conservation, and care of magical creatures is important to many cryptozoologists, who seek to protect them from wizard or mundane interference. Yet the magical ingredients to go in potions or artifacts that can be harvested from these creatures represents a great deal of Leeuwendaalders. A cryptozoologist student must learn the knowledge necessary to protect and foster these creatures, as well as the knowledge to hunt, capture, and exploit them effectively, pitting each student’s love for living things against the lure of the Leeuwendaalder.

TYPES: Big Game Hunter, Veterinarian, Harvester, Animal Friend, Dungeon Master, Cattle Driver

Marshall

Marshals develop the most detailed understanding of the institutional functioning of the Magimundi, and the necessary means to protect it from all its enemies, including advanced mind magic.

The Path of the Marshal (Marshal students do not allow it to be referred to as the Marshal Path) is perhaps the most arduous and prestigious path of scholarship (according to Marshals anyway!). More than merely law enforcement, experience as a Marshal is considered to be a requirement for eligibility as a Province Justice. Marshal students must learn to become formidable magical combatants in addition to having a deep working knowledge of the nuances of magical law. Marshals have a special responsibility to enforce the Edicts of Justices, resolve contractual disputes, capture criminals, escort criminals to Avernus, and be its province’s standing military.

Successfully graduating as an Accredited and Certified Wizard on the Marshal Path also does not necessarily mean that a student will actually be inducted into the Marshals. Membership usually requires some degree of patronage from a mentor. However there is no shortage of employment, with very lucrative Leeuwendaalder compensation, for a graduate with Marshal training. In addition to formidable magical combat prowess, Marshals specialize in mind magic, and should be consulted to determine whether a wizard’s mind has been invaded or altered, or to determine whether the allegation of possession or being under a curse is indeed accurate. There are strict rules that govern when and whether a Marshal can break into someone’s mind, but in the heat of a situation and a quest for answers, interrogation techniques may not always follow the law.

TYPES: Judge/Jury, Secret Agent, Sheriff, Political Activist, Well-Informed Criminal, Enforcer, Magical Lawyer
